THE 1857 NIGER EXPEDITION

It was a joint venture between Britain government, CMS and traders. DR William Bankie and LT Glover and Samuel Ajayi Crowther were involved in the expedition. Trading ports were established at Abo, Onitsha and Lokoja. There was a disaster at JEBBA when “dayspring” capsized, no lives were lost, and it forced the missionaries to remain in RABBA for a while and gave Ajayi Crowther the advantage of studying NUPE

REASONS WHY EUROPEAN MISSIONARIES CAME TO AFRICA

1) To evangelize

2) To check the spread of Islam

3) To abolish slave trade

4) To establish legitimate trade

5) To alleviate certain human miseries

6) The appeal of ex slaves

7) The desire to make colonies.
