The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Akoka has signed an agreement with a private company, Bionomics Nigeria Limited to install a total of 1,000 new Closed-Circuit televisions otherwise known as CCTV cameras at the main campus and two other campuses of the university.

The agreement under the public-private partnership arrangement was signed on Thursday by the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe (University of Lagos vice chancellor) and the Managing Director of Bionomics Nigeria Limited, Mr. Oluchukwu Onyedika.

Prof Ogundipe said the project comes with a control station to be built on campus with its completion coming in December. He said the university believes in building blended security architectures combined with security personnel on the ground will effectively prevent criminal activities in

and around its three campuses. According to him, the University campuses are short of CCTV cameras in strategic locations, hence, the addition of sophisticated devices will be favorable. He also disclosed that out of 1,000 donated cameras, 700 would be installed at the main campus while 300 will be set for the two other campuses at Idi-Araba (The university teaching hospital, generally refer to as youth) and Yaba (where UNILAG has other extension like Radiography).

It was revealed at the meeting that Bionomics Nigeria Limited agreed to coach and educate the students at the University on CCTV camera installation proceedings. “Our students would also be trained by the company on CCTV camera installation, among others,” he said The managing director later announced that UNILAG would be the first tertiary institution in Nigeria to have a high-tech security device across strategic locations on campuses.

As to all that has been spoken of, I suppose the university with this great innovation is trying to still stand on it slogan of University of First Choice and Nation’s pride.
